What Is a VPN? A Plain-English Explanation

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) encrypts your internet connection and hides your real IP address. All your traffic routes through a VPN server, so websites see that server’s IP instead of yours.

How a VPN Works

  1. You install a VPN app and connect to a server
  2. Your device and the VPN server create an encrypted tunnel
  3. All internet traffic travels through that tunnel
  4. Websites see the VPN server’s IP, not your real one

What a VPN Protects You From

  • ISP snooping — your provider cannot see which sites you visit
  • Public Wi-Fi attacks — encrypted traffic cannot be intercepted
  • IP-based tracking — advertisers see the VPN’s IP, not yours

What a VPN Does NOT Protect You From

  • Browser cookies and fingerprinting
  • Malware or viruses
  • Logging by the VPN provider itself
